Centric relation

Maxillo-mandibular relationship, independent of tooth contact, in which the condyles articulate in the anterior-superior position against the posterior slopes of the articular eminences. JPT9

This paper studied at the different in what investigators report on an assessment of four techniques used to establish centric relation in dentate individuals.

The techniques analyzed were:

1- Swallowing or free closure

Coined by Shanahan

2- Chin point guidance

Coined by McCollum

3- Chin point guidance with anterior jig

Coined by Lucia

4- Bilateral manipulation

Coined by Dawson/Pankey, Mann, Schuyler (PMS)

Results:

Assessment done to evaluate deviation from center of cluster of dots (deviation from the median point)

  • Bilateral manipulation (0.05 mm)
  • Chin point guidance with anterior jig (0.07 mm)
  • Chin point guidance (0.14 mm).
  • Swallowing (0.40 mm)
