Adults:
  • Amoxicillin Capsules, 500 mg| 21 capsule 3 times/Day for 7 days

Amoxicillin-Clavulunate (250-500-875 mg) | Tablet
Brand names: Amoclan, Augmentin, Augmentin ES-600, Augmentin XR
 
Use:

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Clavulanate potassium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that helps prevent certain bacteria from becoming resistant to amoxicillin.

Adults:
  • One 875-mg tablet of AUGMENTIN every 12 hours
  • One 500-mg tablet of AUGMENTIN every 8 hours.
  • Maximum dose :
    • 40 mg/kg/day
 
Side effect:
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Headache.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Gas.
  • Stomach pain.
  • Skin rash or itching.
  • White patches in your mouth or throat
 
Medication interaction:

Taking Augmentin with oral anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) might increase the effects of the anticoagulants

IV/IM: 1-2 g/6hr

  • Acute inflammatory skin eruption
  • Redness of the skin
  • Rash.
  • Hives.
  • Fever.
  • Seizure.
  • Black hairy tongue.

Medication interaction:

Ampicillin has no known severe interactions with other drugs.

 
 
Cefazolin (250-500 mg) | Tablet/Capsule
Brand names: Kefzol and Ancef
 
Use:

Cefazolin is suggested for patients who are allergic to penicillin and cannot take the medication by mouth, with the dosage of 1 g IV or IM 30 minutes before the procedure

Adults:
500mg every 12 hours. Mild infections: 250–500mg every 8 hours; moderate to severe infections: 500mg–1g every 6–8 hours.
 
 
Side effect:
  • Genital itching.
  • White patches in mouth.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Heartburn.
  • Gas.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea
 
Medication interaction:

Can interact with aminoglycoside antibiotics (such as tobramycin, gentamicin), “blood thinners” (such as warfarin), chloramphenicol.

 
 
 
 
Ceftriaxone (125-250-500 mg) Capsule/Suspension
Brand names: Rocephin
 
Use:
Adults:
1 to 2 g IV or IM every 12 to 24 hours.
 
Side effect:
  • Black, tarry stools.
  • Chest pain.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Sore throat.
  • Sores, ulcers.
  • Swollen glands.
 
Medication interaction:

Ceftriaxone has no known severe interactions with other drugs.

Use:

Cephalexin effective for treating dental abscesses and gingival infections

Adults:

One 500-mg tablet/6h for 7 days

  • Abdominal pain.
  • Clay-colored stools.
  • Weakness.
  • itching or rash.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Red skin lesions, often with a purple center.
 
Medication interaction:

Cephalexin can interact with certain medications and supplements, such as metformin, warfarin, and zinc.

 
 
 
 
Azithromycin (250-500-600 mg) | Tablet
Brand names: Zithromax, Zithromax Tri-Pak, Zithromax Z-Pak, Zmax
 
Use:

Azithromycin produces a “focused” cure and is an appropriate antibiotic for these infections

Adults:

One 500-mg tablet/day for 3 days

  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Headache.
  • Diarrhea.
 
Medication interaction:

Using azithromycin while taking nelfinavir, which is a drug that helps treat HIV, can increase the risk of liver abnormalities and hearing problems.

 
 
 
Clarithromycin (250-500 mg) | Tablet/Suspension
Brand names: Klaricid, Klaricid XL, Xetinin XL
 
Use:

Clarithromycin is an effective drug for patients who are allergic or have sensitivities to penicillin. Clarithromycin is often used in the treatment of dental abscesses.

Adults:

250 to 500 milligrams (mg) every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days.

 
 
Side effect:
  • Nausea.
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating and indigestion.
  • Headaches.
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
 
Medication interaction:

Taking these drugs with clarithromycin may cause severe muscle problems.
