Restorative space

Restorative space - part 1

Vertical restorative space : Single screw/cemented implant supported crown, Implant supported fixed dental prosthesis screw/cemented

Restorative Space definitions:

    • Dental restorative space may be defined as the 3-dimensional oral space available for prosthodontic restoration. Ahuja et al, JPD 2011
    • The vertical distance between the maxillary and mandibular dentate or edentate arches. Esposito et al 1993

How to measure it?

  • In general terms, this space in edentulous patients is bounded by the proposed occlusal plane, denture bearing tissues of the edentulous jaw, and applying similar concept to the other treatment scenarios. Ahuja et al, JPD 2011

Important of this space:

  1. Phonetic
  2. Esthetic
  3. Mechanical – enough thickness for materials
  4. Occlusion

Crown Height Space :

Distance from the crest of the bone to the plane of occlusion in the posterior region and the incisal edge of “the opposing tooth” in the anterior region. GPT 9

Restorative Space Includes

    • Vertical Component
    • Horizontal Component

Anterior Single crown

Screw Retained
Ideal space: 8-12mm
>15mm concerns about Esthetics & Hygiene
Realistic Minimum: 6mm (metal lingual surface used)

Cement Retained
Ideal space: 8-12mm >15mm concerns about Esthetics & Hygiene Realistic Minimum: 8mm (7mm – metal lingual surface used)

Posterior Single crown

Screw Retained
Ideal space: 8-12mm >15mm concerns about Esthetics & Hygiene Minimum: 3-7mm (must be screw retained)

Cement Retained
Ideal space: 8-12mm >15mm concerns about Esthetics & Hygiene Minimum: 4-7mm (must be metal crown/metal occlusal)

Fixed Partial Dentures

FDP/FPD
Ideal space: 8-12mm – Same as for single crowns >15mm concerns about Esthetics & Hygiene Key difference is FPD connector size Depends on materials used (Metal, PFM, All-Ceramic)

FPD connector size

Full Gold:

  • 2mm height, 3mm width for posterior
  • 3mm height, 2mm width for anterior

Metal Ceramic

  • Anterior FPD: 2.5 mm in height, 2.5 mm in width

Lithium Disilicate:

  • 4-5 mm in height, 3-4 mm width

Zirconia:

  • 4 mm in height, 3 mm width
